PREHISTORIC POTTERY CLASS

Many people ask:  Why do you do this?  Why try and duplicate ancient pottery?

The answer is that at The Smoki Museum we have one of the largest collections of locally sourced pottery on display in the United States.  Is it pretty?  NO  Is it functional?  VERY  Was it easy to make?  NO

Our region supplies clay of many different types and kinds.  Working this clay requires patience, understanding and a willingness to learn skills that are not easily acquired.  And, more importantly, once you try and fashion a pot out of our local clay, you will gain great appreciation for our sort of “ugly” pottery collection.  And suddenly, all of those pots on the shelf, have a story of their own.
